Project ‘been everywhere, seen everything’

General
I work with acrylic paint on canvas. I am captivated by the tension which I see and feel around me, and realize that nothing is what is seems. A tension with elements of oppression, suffocation, desires and expectation, melancholy, desolation, beauty and hope.

My inspiration comes from daily life. From photographs I took myself. Many of these images which are inspiring me have their origins in countries outside the Netherlands.

In May 2006 I received a stipend from The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB). I was able to work in my studio for the rest of 2006 to concentrate and intensively paint to deepen my work further.

2007
For 2007 I desided to allow unlimited influence of the outside world in my working process. I planned to travel and paint for a year and work in a number of artists in residencies (Georgia, Iran, India, China and Russia). During my overland round-tour to the Netherlands I will make a picture report, in the form of drawings and photographs. The photographs and drawings will serve as inspiration for my work at the artist residencies.

artists in residency
I planned five artist residencies with approximately a month travel time in between each one. The time spent in each residency will allow me to give visual form to the impressions and inspirations gained from my research during each leg of the journey. My choice of the countries results from a mixture of curiosity about cultural differences and my interest in apparent superficiality. The choice of countries is also results from my desire to travel overland, and thereby to experience the gradual transformation of cultures. This choice of a variety of artist residencies seems to me to be an interesting way to further deepen and develop my work.

lost and found
Every artist residency I will conclude with an exhibition and I will donate a work to the country where the original inspiration came from. ‘lost and found’ is the title of the returned paintings.

fridaycolumn
Maintaining my contact with the Netherlands during my travels is important to foreground my awareness of the fact that although I will make my art during 2007 in another reality, I will never the less, inevitably do it from my own cultural context. That is why I have considered this fax project. During the Watt's Up? evenings of the artist initiative ‘Electron’in Breda my column (a black and white drawing) will arrive by fax. My work will be part of this Friday evening and will be placed in another context. Visitors to the artists initiative will be able to respond to me via my weblog.

My picture reports: paintings, sketches, drawings, fryday column, etc. will be digitized and available to interested people on my weblog. Keeping this weblog is not only important for maintaining my contacts, but also for the awareness of my own process, to see my process from an other perspective.

2008
I eventually want conclude my travel with a selection of my work in the form of a book or catalogue and an exhibition under the title: ‘been everywhere, seen everything’. I will ask all coordinators of the artists in residencies to write a text about my work for my book and a curator from an artists in residency to make my final exhibition.
